The Nürburgring circuit is nestled
amongst the Eifel Mountains only 40 Km east of the Belgium
border and 90 Km south of Cologne. This volcanic region
is blessed with natural beauty and is also rich in history.
Locally, the town of Adenau provides historical
interest with its 430 year old market place and architecturally
impressive buildings. A walk through the pretty streets
is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Culture is provided
by two free museums in the town centre. A little further
west is the village of Nürburg that gave the circuit
its name. This is also a picturesque place to visit and
along with Adenau it has some excellent bars and restaurants
(see the link on the left of the page).
Thanks to the trend in extravagant building
adopted by the powerful families during the middle ages,
the Eifel region can boast an extraordinary number of castles,
the closest of course being the Nürburg castle that
rises proudly above the circuit. However, you would do well
to travel a little further a field to find the stunning
Burg Eltz (near Münstermaifeld, 35 Km south east of
Nürburg).
As well as culture, the mountainous surrounding
area provides a vast playground for outdoor pursuits. Hiking
and biking trails are commonplace for miles around and for
the more adventurous there is rock climbing near to Bad
Neuenahr, 30 Km north east of Nürburg.
The incredible draw of the Nordschleife
aside, the Eifel is a wonderful place to visit for all generations.
The only uncertainty is the weather which can be extreme
to say the least!
